[Jade Moods - Chinese Jade Ornaments] LuZigang, a Jade Carving Artist

In his whole life, he had created many jade carving works, among which were the exquisite jade kettle with the baby playing paint, the jade cup with the circle hold and the cover, and the wonderful jade plate, the jade brush pot and the jade crystal stick for the sanctum, and the "exquisite and artful" jade hairpin with the "stem as thin as the hair" and the "price at fifty six gold", and furthermore, the jade plate that makes people fondling admiringly.

The jade hanging articles he made had the square or the rectangular shapes, lenience and stocky, just like the plate, so it was abbreviated as the "Zigang (powerful in Chinese) Plate". The special charm of the Zigang plate was in its new shape, the fancy jade material and the elaborate carving skills. The Zigang plate in the square shape only used the top Hetian jade material from Xinjiang, which is white without defect, smooth and slender, and the patterns are supereminence. And with the lofty jade-carving techniques, in the bass-relief form, he had incisively and vividly expressed the pattern of the calligraphy and the painting as perfect as possible.

Zhang Changlin (1826-1906), another name as Mingshan, followed his father and engaged in making clay figurine when he was young and achieved an excellent skill. It was said that he could accomplished the works in seconds while sitting opposite to the object person and talking with the clay in his hands. [La Cathay World, Asian Jewelry, Vintage Chinese Jewelry, Tibetan Jewelry, Nepal Jewelry] Chinese Painting, Connotations beyond Description

Traditional Chinese painting has a long history. Generally speaking, works before Tang Dynasty mainly focus on the reflection of people's activities, forming a prime time of figure painting. In the middle of Tang Dynasty, paintings in landscape and flower & bird began to be popular. Works with the theme of forest and rural area can free you from the hustle and bustle of the world and enable you to enter a peaceful land, so landscape painting is favored by scholars and officials. Flowers, plants, stones, birds and beasts in the paintings are living creatures in the mountains, full of vitality and also attractive to many people. Therefore, paintings of landscape and flower & bird started to be popular after figure painting. The three kinds of paintings form the three main categories of traditional Chinese painting.

The emperors and aristocrats of Tang and Song Dynasties are the important painting supporters, so the art developed in such an environment had very serious political meaning with its style tending to be magnificent. In Song Dynasty, there was art academy with complete systems in the palace. Esp. Emperor Huizong, who was good at painting, treated artists very well. He also set up organizations to cultivate talents. So the activities of art academy reached the zenith during this period.

[Cheongsam Boutique - Chinese Qipao, Cheongsam Dress, Kungfu Suit] Qipao, Floating with Oriental Bearings

Qi-pao is originally a member of gown family and derived from the female long gown of Manchu in Qing dynasty. Different with the popular loose ch'ang-p'ao and wide belt of Han, the nomadic clothing representative—Manchu Qi-pao is snugly fitting to human's body, and is very convenient in riding, toxophily and other violent activities. After the invasion of Huangtaiji, Beijing was settled as the capital, and a powerful and dynamic wave of changing clothes was called on. The female Qi-pao reached its zenith for the prosperous decorations.

The Revolution of 1911 overthrew the rule by Manchu, and led to the temporary silence of the robe of Qi (the Manchu) people. The dissatisfaction against power of Manchu over 300 years had forced the featured costume of women of Qi, such as 'Dala wing' and 'Basin shoes', to disappear all of a sudden. Till 1924, the last emperor Puyi was driven out of the Forbidden City, the costume of Qing Dynasty had to farewell to the history. In the year 1920 or so, the New Culture Movement aroused people's yearning for beauty, especially the young had appeared unprecedented na?ve, easy and pleasant. During this period, Shanghai had become the new exhibiting stage for women's cosmetics and costumes, that pursuing new fashion had become very popular at that time, since chic girls were sensitive to the fashion of both politics and costumes.
